the top 5 items you need
to make 500whp with your
evo 8/9

As some if not most of you already know. The 4G63 Platform and the Evo 8/9 are near and dear to our hearts here at MAPerformance. From our record breaking 4G63 powered FD Rx7 to our shop car that was one of the FASTEST stock ECU Evo 8s of it’s time! This motor is iconic in the JDM car world for its ability to make a fun reliable amount of horsepower with a few modifications and continues to be an all star to this day.

A lot of the questions we get from you guys on a daily basis revolve around what it takes to get 500whp out of your Evo 8/9.

Today we’re here to give you that ooey gooey, cherry on top, fantastic double scoop of a list that it takes to get your Evo 8/9 to that 500 horsepower, on the ground power.

1. fueling

Now one of the first things you want to consider is fueling. are your plans to make this a full blown track machine or more of a fun, daily street car? are you planning on running pump gas such as 91 or 93? or more of a ethanol blend such at e30, e85, etc. ethanol is going to burn faster, allowing you more power, though not as efficient.

Here at maperformance, we recommend going with a 1650cc or Larger injector. Just know that the larger the injector, the more of a challenge you will have achieving that optimal tune.

To feed those injectors, you're going to have to upgrade the fuel pump as well. big man needs to eat!!

For a fuel pump upgrade, we suggest a walboro 450 pump. This will keep the beast fed.

2. Upgraded Turbo Kit

With evo 8/9, you have tons of options for turbo kits. this car has a bunch of support from various brands that will help you achieve this power goal!

You can go with a forward facing kit, or top mount turbo kit. What we highly recommend as a Super easy Solution, is the MAP T3 Turbo Bolt On Kit. hours upon hours of research and development back this turbo kit and is a very popular seller amongst the entire evo 8/9 community.

now when you get this kit you get the opportunity to choose which turbo you want to pair up with your kit. what we recommend is the 6266 Precision turbo
. with this spooly boy, you will be able to reach that 500hp mark and still have room to grow. this turbo will hold up!

3. tuning solutions

Now with the evo 8/9, you don't need to go with a fancy pants aftermarket ecu. as we've tested, you can put plenty of horsepower on the stock ecu. you just need your trusted tuner or somebody comfortable with the 4g63 platform that will be able to make this fuel and turbo combo achieve the goals you have set for your evo 8/9.

4. driveline upgrades

Now that you have the power in the very front of the car, we need to ensure the rest of the moving components can keep up! the first step in this part that we suggest is an aftermarket clutch. our top sellers and top recommended clutch kits are the act 6 puck clutch, or the excedy twin disk.

keep in mind the twin disk is a bit more aggressive due to it's track oriented nature. if you plan on street driving the car more than hitting the track, we recommend going with the 6 puck route. both are amazing kits and will keep your shifts where they deserve.

5. Fuel rail and fuel regulator

The complexity of today's automobiles often leads to confusion about their inner workings. One oft-misunderstood component is the fuel rail. This small pipe, typically running along the top of an engine, plays a crucial role in allowing your Evo 8/9 to combust fuel efficiently. Without it, gasoline would not be able to reach the individual injectors that deliver it into the engine's cylinders.

In addition to delivering fuel, the fuel rail also often includes a pressure regulator, ensuring that each injector receives the right amount of pressure for optimum combustion.

The design and materials used in fuel rails have evolved over time as Mitsubishi continually strives for better fuel efficiency and performance. So while it may appear simple on the surface, this trusty little pipe helps keep modern engines running smoothly.

other things to consider!!

just like other 500hp cars. there are a few other things we recommend as great additions.

-the first is going to be a front mount intercooler upgrade. this is going to insure that the charge of air going into your motor and throttle body is nice and cool.
3.5" to 4" Front Mount intercooler kits are the size we suggest if you don't want to get into additional fab work.
We recommend the ets intercooler setup as we've had great luck with them, as have many of our customers.

-Another popular upgrade that people will do to make 500whp more effortlessly, is a camshaft. Specifically the Gsc-s2 are the most popular upgrade that we offer that people utilize in the Evo 8, 9 and even 10. That is going to allow more air to get into and out of the engine, making more power in an efficient matter.

-Other things to consider while putting your 500hp Evo 8/9 together would be safety. A few things to consider would be braking and suspension upgrades to your Evo. When you make 500hp you would definitely want to be able to stop it. We recommend the StopTech brake kit, or if you’re a big baller, check out the GiroDisk 2 piece rotor combo. If you’re planning to track the ever living heck out of your Evo, the GiroDisk combo is almost a must have.

-Now for suspension we have a few other options. We got BC, Ohilins, Fortune Auto and more. WE WILL be stocking up on these for Black Friday so make sure you get your winter build started a little early by taking advantage of these deals.
