Evo X Build Series: Boostin Performance Tuning Session

Welcome to Episode 4 of our Evo X build series! As you've seen in previous installments we have the body of this car pretty much finalized - the wheels and tires are on, the exterior is looking sharp, and we even put a MAP-branded wrap on it for good measure. But we're not done - we still have quite a few improvements to take care of, as we'll show you inside.

The Evo X build has reached an exciting stage as we headed down to Boostin Performance, the renowned performance shop known for its top-tier tuning. Boostin, led by Devin Schultz, is recognized for their mastery of the Mitsubishi platform across the country - and the world.

Boostin Performance began humbly—Devin started out tuning cars with friends in a garage, gradually progressing into high-level tuning and performance modifications. His passion transformed into a thriving business specializing in advanced tuning solutions. Nowadays, Devin's shop is truly iconic in the scene, and we're stoked to have worked with him!

The Red Demon: Boostin’s Flagship DSM

The centerpiece at Boostin is the "Red Demon," the legendary 2G DSM you’ve undoubtedly seen in the drag racing community. Capable of 6-second ¼ mile times and trap speeds upwards of 200MPH - this car quite literally speaks for itself when it comes to Devin’s building and tuning capabilities.

Tuning Our Evo X For Maximum Performance

Our Evo X got a full treatment, including a flex fuel kit installation for seamless ethanol integration. This setup integrates effortlessly with the factory wiring, utilizing the fuel tank pressure sensor for real-time ethanol content data without intrusive gauges, managed conveniently via smartphone.

Devin explained the detailed process: blending two distinct tunes—one for 93 octane and another for ethanol—using the flex fuel sensor to dynamically adjust fueling, ignition timing, and boost based on ethanol content. For pump gas, we targeted a safe peak boost around 25 PSI, tapering as you approach redline. On ethanol, the boost target was lifted to 27 PSI for a bit of extra performance - about 40whp worth, which was very impressive.

Dyno Results & Performance Gains on Our Evo X

Initially, at 93 octane, our Evo X delivered an impressive baseline of approximately 326 horsepower and 323 lb-ft torque, with smooth power delivery thanks to careful tuning. After transitioning to ethanol, the Evo flexed its muscles significantly, jumping to a remarkable 355 horsepower and 367 lb-ft torque at around 27 PSI boost. The result places this Evo comfortably within the top 5% of Evo X’s tuned by Boostin Performance, highlighting the efficiency and health of the setup.

Devin emphasized the critical importance of torque management, noting that torque peaks at lower RPMs pose greater risks to engine longevity. By carefully managing boost spikes through advanced electronic controls, we secured robust yet safe performance.
