Fueling Your Build Starts with the Right Knowledge
Driving a turbocharged B-series on the weekend? Or maybe a bone-stock D15? Either way, your ‘92-00 Honda Civic’s performance can depend heavily on one thing that you might not give much thought: the type of fuel that powers it. From pump gas to E85 and high-performance race blends, each option comes with its own set of advantages, as well as drawbacks to consider, depending on your unique build.
With the large number of Civic builds out there, it can be easy to overthink the fuel that goes into your ride. After all, as long as it makes your car go and doesn’t wreck your engine, fuel is fuel right? What’s the big deal? Well that’s sadly the wrong way to think about it, and we’re going to tell you why. This guide will break down all you need to know about the kind of gas you’re loading up into your Civic. What works, what doesn’t, and what’s going to give your build the best performance possible.

Not All Fuel is Created Equal, and the Same Goes for Civic Builds
Fueling your Civic is about more than just picking the highest octane at the pump, it’s really about matching the choice of fuel to match the needs of your engine and performance goals. Your bone-stock daily definitely won’t thrive on the same fuel blend as your buddy’s high-boost turbo setup, and when you fill up blindly, without taking the time to know what fuel option is really best, you risk losing power and even the reliability of your components on the table. So before you head to your favorite stop to fill up the tank, we’re going to cover which fuels are safe, which offer the best benefits, and what makes an option the clear winner depending on your build.

What Fuel Options We Have to Work With
We all know that the ‘92-00 Honda Civic is well-known for its trademark reliability and efficiency, but when it comes to fuel, we aren’t looking at a one-size-fits-all situation. Depending on what kind of build you’re running, your fuel needs can be vastly different than a different build of the same exact car. And there’s more than just octane too, different fuels tend to burn at different rates, handle boost differently, and can even protect your engine at best, or at worst, could even destroy your motor depending on how your engine is tuned.
This is why it’s critical to understand the full range of fuel options you have to choose from. There’s more to gassing up your car than just standard pump fuel, you have to consider ethanol blends and even full-on race fuels as well. Each option comes with its own unique trade-offs in cost, power potential, tuning adjustments, even overall compatibility. So before you decide to commit one way or the other, you need to know which ones can actually give your build the best possible chance of achieving your goals, and which ones you should avoid altogether. Which is exactly what we’ll do next. It’s time to dig into the lineup!

Regular Pump Gas
For most stock D-series builds, 87 octane still gets the job done relatively well. After all, that’s what your Civic was originally designed to run on, so if you’re still rolling with the factory compression, timing, and fueling, then don’t worry, it’ll keep your engine happy. However, the downside of regular fuel is that if your build has any performance mods at all, even simple additions like an aftermarket intake or header, the lower octane rating of regular gas can really hold you back. What happens is that detonation risk increases when your cylinder pressures start to rise, and 87 octane doesn’t give you enough margin for safety or performance.
If this is the case, then its where premium gasoline comes to the rescue. 91-93 octane hits the sweet spot perfectly for Civics with light modification, particularly models running VTEC swaps, higher compression pistons, and other bolt-ons. Premium fuel resists knock better under load, allows for more aggressive tuning than the 87, and even helps you get more out of even the most basic upgrades. The trade-off is that it costs more than 87, but that added headroom you get from the 91-93 is more than worth every cent if you’ve done any kind of modification beyond stock-level components.

High-Octane E85
If you’re the type of enthusiast who’s chasing the big numbers on a turbocharged setup, E85 is a great option that’s hard to ignore. It’s got an effective octane rating around 105, so it resists detonation like a pro, and burns cooler than traditional gas, so you get to run more boost, more timing, and make more power safely. In many areas, it’s also cheaper per gallon, so the fuel savings are appealing for performance-based street builds as well as track builds as well. It’s a great option that Honda owners love for turbo builds, as long as your setup is ready to it.
That caveat is the big question with E85, however. This fuel type requires more supporting mods that just aren’t necessary for regular fuel. Think larger injectors, higher-flow fuel pumps, even a full return-style fuel system. You’ll also need to get a proper ethanol-safe tune, since the fuel’s stoic ratio tends to be very different from regular gasoline. Another important consideration for E85 is that higher ethanol count absorbs moisture better and degrades better than regular gasoline, it’s not an ideal option for cars that tend to sit for longer periods of time, and are driven infrequently. E85 is a powerful and even affordable option, but it’s not the universal kind of plug-and-play option that’s going to work for every kind of build.

High-Performance Race Fuel
Race fuel is the cream of the crop for turbo setups with serious boost or high-compression NA builds. Boasting octane ratings ranging from 100 to 120+, racing fuel resists knock better than anything else and is super-refined, which allows tuners the ability to squeeze every last drop of horsepower without fear of detonation. When your Civic build wants to consistently produce big power and you need a certain level of consistency, this fuel gives you stability and performance like no other can.
Like a certain superhero’s uncle once said, with great power comes great….cost. Right? Well, it’s close enough. Racing fuel is really expensive, often difficult to find, and can seem like overkill for your average street build/daily driver. In order to even run with race gas, you’ll need a tune that’s specifically calibrated for that fuel to take advantage of the benefits. Unless you’re dedicated to running a performance-oriented track setup or you’re dreaming of record-setting passes, you’ll probably be better off going with premium pump gas or E85 in order to achieve a balanced blend of performance and practicality. Race gas has a time and place to shine, but if your build is more daily than anything else, that isn’t the right fit.
Skip the Bad Fuel and Feed Your Build What It Really Needs
This probably goes without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway. Don’t try to run diesel, leaded race fuel, or any other kind of off-the-wall blend that’s not meant for your Civic. Diesel will plug up your injectors and fuel system in mere seconds, and leaded fuels can wreck your oxygen sensors and catalytic converters on most builds. While this guide should point you in the right direction, we’re also going to just flat-out tell you that there’s no magical fuel trick that makes your Civic a track monster without the right upgrades and tuning to back it up.
What kind of fuel you choose should always match your setup, no matter what that may be. And when you’ve got that decided, you can head over to MAPerformance to get the rest of it.
