2015+ Subaru WRX Intercooler Upgrade
Imagine dropping the hammer on your 2015+ Subaru WRX and feeling the power of your FA20DET engine pull you forward with ambition. Now, imagine doing the same with an upgraded top mount intercooler. You'll not only feel the power in the back of your seat, but notice it in the way the engine accelerates, and most likely, the squeal of the tires will be another indication of a mod well done.
A 2015 Subaru WRX top mount Intercooler upgrade is a great first step in the automotive world beyond basic bolt-ons. With an upgraded intercooler, you'll see reduced charge temps which in turn leads to much better throttle response and overall power. On top of that, utilizing the stock top mount location will keep the car stock looking and even better, allow for easy installation.

As you'll see when spending some time on the site, Ian and the rest of the MAP team tend to work their magic in taking care of their customers. This piece was no exception which was coordinated on the fly amidst a multiple item order. Install went without a hitch. I'm still ironing out some wrinkles with the build independent of this, but its contribution to the feel of my drives is certain.
Install is pretty straight forward, best to try and fit the side of the intercooler in first I found, but now heat soak is now a thing of the past. After a nice cruise around town I open the hood and the throttle side of the intercooler is ice cold to to the touch still, unlike the stock one where after a couple pulls or any city driving and it would be as warm as a space heater. This intercooler was able to get the manifold temp to 6 degrees above ambient under decent throttle at 48 degrees, the stock intercooler on a good day was only getting 20 degrees or so above. All this combined helps it pull all the way to redline without feeling the intercooler fully heat soaking and the car losing power anymore. Great option especially at its price point. Fits with some space to spare so I was able to keep my strut bar in as well, makes me a happy customer.
Living in So. Cal. And driving the freeways here(1.5 hrs to go 16 miles), heat soak causes the car to be sluggish when getting off the freeway. One of the first mods I wanted was a better TMIC. The part is VERY well made and very impressive in its size over the stock unit. Air flow through the unit is better due to its bar/plate construction. Fitting the new intercooler was a bit of a challenge because of its bigger size. I was trying every angle I could to get it into place. Finally just as I was going to go sit down and get away from the whole thing for a few minutes, it just fell into place......... I guess the lesson is..... don’t fight it!!! LOL! I don’t have a device to measure Charge temp yet, but I can tell when I get off of the freeway this was a good mod to do. The car runs well. I also installed a Perrin Charge pipe with this part. Between the two, throttle response is now smoother, also, it seems as the car pulls stronger throughout the RPM range, the flat spot is greatly reduced now. Guess between the two parts I’ll need to get a protune. Just for reference, I run a stock intake and exhaust.
I bought the MAP intercooler because I liked the end tank design. It looked like they paid attention to flow characteristics instead of just trying to make their intercooler big. I was impressed with the quality and fit. I already had a AEM charge pipe so I had to get a different (longer) coupler for the charge pipe to make it fit properly. I did notice better trottle response but is still cold so the real test will come when it warms up. I like the MAP video's and their customer service. I would definitely recommend this intercooler and I think it is a good value too!
