Would a New Mitsubishi Evo Actually Be Any Good?

A few weeks ago we posted a question that got more comments than we expected: if Mitsubishi actually built a new Lancer Evolution, would it be worth driving? Not "wouldn't it be cool," because obviously it would be cool. The real question is whether a modern Evo, built under 2026 regulations with a 2026 powertrain, could possibly deliver what the old cars did. We got enough responses in the comments that we figured the topic deserved more than an Instagram caption. So here's the long version, with the receipts.

What Was Actually Said

The comment that started all of this came from Keisuke Kishiura, who took over as Mitsubishi's president and COO in April 2026 after 33 years at the company. Asked directly about the fate of the Lancer Evolution, along with the Galant and Diamante nameplates, he didn't dodge it. "Models such as the Lancer Evolution, Diamante, and Galant are very important cars for Mitsubishi Motors, and we consider them treasures," he said, adding that he wants to "make it a company that can produce such a wonderful car again in the future."

That's about as direct as a corporate executive gets on a car that's been dead since 2015. And it's worth noting Kishiura isn't just reciting a talking point some PR team handed him; one of his first cars was an older Lancer Turbo with a manual transmission, which tracks. He also mentioned wanting Mitsubishi back in the World Rally Championship, which is the kind of thing you say when you actually miss it.

So the sentiment is real. The question is whether sentiment turns into a car.

Why It Probably Won't Happen Soon

Kishiura was careful to say there's no active program. "At this time, there are no specific plans to introduce these models." That matters more than the treasures line. We have to look where Mitsubishi is actually putting its money right now.

Mitsubishi's current lineup runs on shared platforms out of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and those platforms are built around SUVs and crossovers: tall, family-oriented, built for cargo space and ride comfort, not front-mid-engine weight balance and rally-ready geometry. Engineering a bespoke performance sedan platform from scratch is a massive capital outlay for a company Mitsubishi's size, and nothing in their current five-year plan suggests they're budgeting for it.

Then there's the powertrain problem, and this is the one that should worry Evo fans the most. Mitsubishi's electrification strategy right now is built around plug-in hybrids, with the Outlander PHEV as the flagship example. A traditional twin-scroll turbo four, the kind of engine that defined every Evo from the CT9A's 4G63T through the CZ4A's 4B11T, doesn't fit that roadmap at all. And if a next-gen Evo does end up as a PHEV to satisfy that roadmap, you're adding battery mass to a chassis that was already fighting its own weight. The final Evo X ran around 3,400 pounds. A hybrid variant of a new one would very likely be heavier than that, not lighter, and weight is the one thing every fast car in history has fought to lose, not gain.

The last piece is motorsport, and it's the one nobody's talking about enough. The Evo's entire identity came out of rally homologation. Every generation existed because Group A homologation rules required Mitsubishi to build at least 500 road-legal units before Tommi Mäkinen could take the real one rallying. Take away the motorsport program and you're not building an Evo anymore, you're building a sport sedan with an Evo badge on it. Ralliart's recent "revival" has been cosmetic trim packages, not a return to actual competition. Until that changes, the treasures comment is aspiration, not a roadmap.

The Deeper Problem: You Can't Spec-Sheet Your Way to Soul

Here's where our original concern comes in, and it's less about Mitsubishi specifically and more about what's happened to performance cars generally. The 90s and 2000s Evos worked because everything about them was mechanically honest. Turbo lag you could feel building, then a hard shove once the 4G63 came on boost. A manual gearbox that made you complicit in every gear change. Active Yaw Control and Super All-Wheel Control doing genuinely clever things with torque distribution that you could feel through the wheel, not just read about in a spec sheet. None of that was manufactured for effect. It was the byproduct of an engineering team solving a rally problem, and the fact that it felt alive on the street was a side effect, not the design brief. The thing that stands out every time with any 4G63 or 4B11 build isn't the peak number, it's how much of the car's personality comes from that engine fighting you a little before it rewards you.

Modern regulations, safety mandates, and emissions requirements have quietly stripped a lot of that mechanical honesty out of new cars across the board, EV or not. Heavy crash structures and battery packs have led to higher curb weight across platforms. Electric power steering has been tuned for isolation instead of feedback while turbo lag has been engineered away entirely in the name of drivability. Individually, every one of these changes makes sense. Stacked together across fifteen years, they're a big part of why a lot of new performance cars feel competent and fast but hollow compared to what came before them. That's not nostalgia talking, it's a real, measurable shift in what these cars are built to do.

But We Should Be Fair: It's Not Impossible

We'd be doing this topic a disservice if we didn't bring up the counterargument, because there's a real one. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N exists, and it's proof that an EV doesn't automatically have to feel dead. Hyundai's engineers didn't just drop a big battery in a crossover and call it a day. They stiffened the body-in-white for better torsional rigidity, tuned the suspension bushings for feedback instead of isolation, and built a torque-vectoring rear axle system (N Corner Rascal) that can send nearly all the power backward for genuine drifting. Then they layered in N e-Shift, a simulated eight-speed dual-clutch shift feel, and N Active Sound+, a synthesized engine note pushed through eight interior speakers plus exterior units, tuned well enough that people who've driven it say you can feel the simulated exhaust resonate through the car at idle. Reviewers who came in skeptical, including engineers from Porsche, have walked away impressed.

The point isn't that fake shift paddles and speaker noise are the same thing as a real 4G on boost. They're not. The point is that Hyundai proved character in an EV performance car isn't physically impossible, it's just expensive and it requires an engineering team that treats driver feel as a primary design goal instead of an afterthought. That's the bar, and it's a high one.

Where That Leaves the Evo Question

This is the part that actually worries us, and it's less about EVs generally and more about Mitsubishi specifically. The Ioniq 5 N happened because Hyundai committed real budget and real engineering headcount to chasing driver feel on purpose, on top of a company that's already running full factory WRC and rally programs on other cars in its lineup. Mitsubishi, by its own president's admission, has no active program, no dedicated platform, and no current motorsport effort to build one around. Treasures is a nice word. It doesn't buy you a bespoke chassis or a rally budget.

So if a new Evo does eventually happen, and it uses a shared crossover-derived platform with PHEV power because that's what's already tooled and funded, we think the fear in our original post holds up: it could very easily be fast on paper and forgettable to drive, which would be the worst possible outcome for a nameplate this respected. If it happens the Ioniq 5 N way, with real investment in chassis feel and a return to actual competition, it could be something worth caring about again. Right now, based on everything Mitsubishi has said and funded, the first outcome is a lot more likely than the second.
