Why Do Aftermarket Exhaust Systems Drone? (And How to Fix It?)

Exhaust drone is one of those annoying problems car enthusiasts can run into when modifying their build. You find the right exhaust that looks and sounds cool, but then it starts to drone, making for a less than ideal driving experience. We got our experts to take a look at why exhausts drone and how to stop it. Take a look at the video below or scroll down to find more answers.

What is Exhaust Drone?

When you hit the highway and reach higher speeds, you may hear a kind of humming behind your ears. That is probably exhaust drone. Exhaust drone is the vibrating sound that occurs most often at highway speeds, when the engine and exhaust system are vibrating incompatibly. Because of this inconsistency, the vibrations enter your cabin adding extra pressure, which is not a fun experience.

Why do some Exhausts Drone?

An exhaust system’s design has an impact on whether it will drone or not, but also your vehicle’s cabin size. Sometimes vehicles with larger cabins can be more prone to exhaust drone because they have more volume for those vibrations to escape into. Another reason may be where the exhaust tips are placed, if mufflers are removed, or extended exhaust pipes can cause inconsistencies in vibrations.

How to Stop Drone?

Adding resonators and other sound-deadening parts can reduce the risk of droning. Other exhaust systems like those designed by AWE have 180 technology. This design allows the sound waves that move from the ports to the resonator and then back through the ports and out through the resonator, effectively neutralizing the incompatible sound waves before re-entering the resonator before leaving the exhaust.
