How to Build Your Motor With The Right Parts

Engine Blocks

If you want to modify your motor, knowing whether your engine block is open deck or closed deck is a good place to start. Closed deck engine blocks emit warmer temperatures but are stronger whereas open deck blocks offer cooler temperatures. Depending on your application, you can add cylinder sleeves to strengthen the engine block, draw heart away from the combustion chamber, and reduce friction.

Pistons

We have two kinds of Wiseco forged pistons we want to talk about. We’ll start off with the stage 1 piston, this part has a wider skirt and is a good drop in solution for mid- to high-range performance levels. This piston has similar to OEM style oiling ports and gas ports.

 

The stage 2 piston lacks a full skirt to reduce friction against the cylinder wall, making a more efficient engine performance. It has slightly larger oil ports than the stage 1 piston while having a much larger wrist pin boss. There is a little less stability with this piston, but the tradeoff is that it provides more power.

Connecting Rods

I-beam and h-beam rods are both forged steel rods that will give your build an edge. The h-beam design is a little cheaper, lighter but can be a tradeoff with boosted engines as they start to bend with the cylinder pressure. They are great for mid-range applications, but can be riskier with high-book, high-load applications. 

The I-beam rod is a bit smaller than the h-beam, making it a prime choice for tightly-packed engine blocks. It’s a denser, stronger construction that is ideal for high-boost builds. 

There are other rods you can choose like aluminum or titanium. Aluminum rods can be less forgiving in terms of lifespan. Steel rods can stretch over time, making maintenance of those parts a higher priority. Titanium rods offer light-weight longevity but also start at a higher price point.

Camshafts

Camshafts are essential for engine efficiency. Several aftermarket camshafts have greater lift and duration than stock camshafts, which optimizes a car’s fuel efficiency, horsepower, and engine operations. For high-range applications, you’re going to need more lift (more air in, more air out) to get the most out of your engine.

Porting

Knowing the porting around your camshaft is another area you should look at. Check your intake and exhaust ports before modding your vehicle. You’ll need to know if they are OEM ports or a modded CNC ported head. That will determine how you can adapt your intake and exhaust ports for maximum efficiency. 

 

Head Studs

Head studs are a highly recommended upgrade for engine block security, leak prevention, and head gasket failure. Leveling up from OEM to aftermarket head studs is a worthy investment that provides much more clamping force for higher cylinder pressure. Whenever you’re modding your engine, you will want to upgrade the head studs to the proper configuration, especially if you are moving from an NA to turbocharged application.
