VAREX Universal Adjustable Muffler

VAREX™ mufflers utilize our patented* technology to combine both the design of the stock muffler and the performance muffler into one single compact unit. A sophisticated butterfly valve mechanism is implemented to redirect the exhaust gas flow and vary be-tween the two. For higher sound level, the exhaust flows are directed through the opening path and produces maximum power with a robust sound level (or the “sports car note”) and near-zero resistance.

Whilst for lower sound level, the exhaust flows are directed through the chambered path (similar design with the stock muffler), and produces minimum sound level that gives you the best in-car comfort. Angle of the valve is also controllable, which can be adjusted to stop at various points between sports mode and silence mode. This gives you further freedom to set the optimal sound level according to your desired preference.

Works a little too well

When closed, my evo x sounds like a vaccum cleaner and quieter than stock despite this muffler being the only part of the exhaust (there is no cat res or muffler besides the varex muffler). When opened, the sound is semi loud, but not nearly as loud as it was when straight piped. You should know that 1) this muffler is absolutely massive and it wont fit next to the driveshaft; itll have to be on the axleback section and 2) that the valve likes to get stuck sometimes (Just hit it with anything hard once or twice and itll work again).

VMK16-300 review

Great, beautiful product. Excellent workmanship on the stainless steel. It comes with the control unit, harness and remote which some vendors like Summit Racing was not sure about it. MAP has to verify for me from their warehouse (great customer service). The only flaw is the flange of the muffler inlet is not perfectly flat. I have to use double gaskets to sure proper sealing, so no exhaust leak. Otherwise, everything is great and looks really good.

The plate inside the muffler opens/closes very quickly. I would say within one second. The overall constructions and design is very good. There is plenty of wire length to install the control box location as you prefer. The muffler is mirror polished and seems to have good welds as well. I have it installed on 2003 Mitsibishi Evo with GSC S2 CAMS (equivalent to 274’s), DBB FP Black with SS hot side . With the valve/plate closed it is very quiet (factory exhaust like if not quieter)! To my surprise inside of the muffler has perforated walls that help muffle the sound when the plate is open. So essentially it acts as a glass pack straight through muffler when the valve/plate is open. With it open, its not super loud and has a deep bass note. On this version i purchased , you could use the end pipe as a tip because it extends far, cut/finished well and mirror polished. My only wish would be if they would have made the diameter a little smaller. It is 7 inches in diameter and in my opinion if they would have made it 5 or 6 inches it would have been even better. But overall I am super happy and I should have gotten this a long time ago.
