Best Mazda Miata Coilovers for Road Racing | How to choose the best coilover set

Erik Blume  septiembre 18 2019

Are cheap Miata coilovers the best? Why should you sacrifice a few bucks for high quality parts?

When working on a purpose built Miata, there are a ton of things to consider before getting too far into your project. Engine mods, aerodynamics, wheel and tire setups, and suspension geometry all play a critical part in blueprinting an autocross project. Without the right suspension setup, you're never going to make it to the podium. [caption id="attachment_9230" align="aligncenter" width="498"]best mazda miata coilovers Do you know the answer?[/caption] A built Mazda BP-4W is nothing without the right gear riding on the chassis. There are many suspension manufacturers in the market today, all claiming the same thing: the best grip, at the best price. However, lets evaluate these claims and take them into consideration when building the ultimate autocross Miata! First things first, cheaper is typically NOT better. While it may make your bank account happier in the short term, the long term scenario is this: you're going to pay over time, especially if you drive the car hard. Less expensive coilover kits are typically made with cheaper, low quality materials. These coilovers are not designed for track use, rather show cars and daily driven project cars that want to appear low. They are designed to get you low, not necessarily around the track any faster. Such coilovers have reduced options for ride height, camber/caster, and do not come with the necessary alignment components. While these kits are affordable on most peoples budgets, they lack adjustability beyond 15 points and are not the best choice for Autocross. Furthermore, the spring and dampening rates are better suited for street and daily driver use. Compare these to the KW Variant 3 Miata Coilovers, and you're given up to 30 different levels of adjustment along with a more aggressive shock that has been optimized for time attack and autocross racing. While the KW's are almost twice the cost, they are better designed for hard use. Using Xida-S on the Miata. They feel very similar to the Vishnu Ohlins on my Evo.

For miata, xidas are the best, but you gotta fork $2300 for them :(
