Sometimes “redneck engineering” leads to some creative solutions, but when we try to make do with a rigged-up tool, the results are usually painful or disastrous. On the flip side, the right tool makes any job a joy to complete.
That means if you plan on boring or honing the cylinders in your block, you absolutely need a torque plate. Sorry to be dramatic, but it’s the truth. A torque plate is a must-have tool for that job. Without the plate, the torque-down process on the block causes the threads to slightly deform the cylinder. That’s bad news for the place where your pistons are flying up and down. With the plate, that distortion is simulated within the plate, not your block, removing those irregularities.
We make our own torque plates in our machine shop. We use 2-inch billet aluminum and include the proper spacers for the exact depth of penetration into the block.
