2015-2021 Subaru WRX and 2015-2021 Subaru WRX STI Axle-Back Exhaust by MAPerformance

Our fabrication team at Modern Automotive Performance is proud to present the newly-designed MAP Axle-Back Exhaust for VA-Chassis Subaru WRX and STi Sedans.

These Axle-Backs are highly durable, and were designed using 2" tubing constructed from quality T304 Stainless Steel. They feature 3/8" laser-cut flanges, mandrel bends, and are TIG-welded to perfection. These will bring out a deeper and more aggressive tone from your vehicle.

They also look as good as they sound! The stylish 3.5" exhaust tips are the icing on the cake, and are available in standard stainless steel or burnt blue. These are designed as a direct fit at the OEM Y-Pipe, and are available with or without resonators. Includes 3/8" exhaust hangers.

Please Note: Does Not Fit SPT Exhaust.

MAPerformance Resonated Axle-back: 4.5/5 - Great first mod!

Speaking as someone without any mechanical experience, this is the perfect first modification you can do to your WRX. It's 100% worth it. The car actually sounds like a sports car now. I've put together a sound comparison of the Resonated Axle-back vs the stock mufflers in a linked video, so you can see if it's right for you.

TL;DR: Sound is great (check the video for a comparison vs stock). Quality is almost perfect. Fitment is very good with a few caveats. If you're a mechanical noob and thinking about an Axle-back, don't hesitate. Your WRX will feel like a brand new car.

Sound - 5/5
The sound is 99% perfect. Super rumbly, bassy goodness. No rasp. Definitely not obnoxious by any means. This is what the car should've sounded like stock. Your car will go from a sleeper to sounding like a sports car with 1-2 hours of effort. The only caveat on the sound I'd add is that it's probably 2x as loud in the cabin at 80+ mph (where it sits at ~3k rpm to maintain speed) than it is stock, so keep that in mind if you do a lot of highway cruising at those speeds. You'll probably have that with any muffler delete, though.

Quality - 4/5
The finish of the product is great. Welds look perfect (and pretty). No issues with sealing up exhaust leaks. I recommend just reusing the stock donut gasket, as it's 10x easier to get a leak-free seal with than larger flat gaskets. The only quality issue I noticed was that the key-holes cut into the exhaust tips had a bit of a lip on the inside that required sanding down with low grit sandpaper to slide down onto the actual muffler pipe. Just make sure you get the tips on deep enough that don't see any gap through key-holes when you're sliding them on, or you'll have an exhaust leak through it. I didn't have any clamp issues even after installing and removing them half a dozen times when adjusting the fitment, unlike other reviews.

Fitment - 4/5

In terms of the install, it's really simple and easy. You'll need a torque wrench capable of 35 ft lbs (2019 wrx) with a 14mm socket, a 14mm wrench, and a 10mm socket for the exhaust clamp bolts. Silicon lubricant definitely helps moving the exhaust hangers in and out of the rubber bushings. You likely won't need 4 position exhaust bushings, but if you're really picky about fitment they can help. I'd also recommend some pavers or ramps to raise up the back end of the car so you have more working space underneath.

My only complaint with the fitment is that the tips will jut out about 3/4 inch further from the bumper than stock without modification. Not a big deal unless you're picky. Since the exhaust tips are clamp on though, you can remove them and trim the muffler pipe directly, and then slide the tips back on to get your desired look without requiring a welder. I wanted a more stock look, so I took about half an inch off my muffler pipe with an angle grinder (it's high quality 16 gauge stainless steel, so don't even bother with a multi-wheel exhaust cutter. Believe me, I tried several). I've included before and after pictures where I was really able to dial in my fitment, and I'm super happy with it now.
