VW Mk6 GTI Accessport AP3-VLK-001 Release (2010-2011 2.0 engines) & Cobb ProTuner Insight!

As many have heard the rumors circulating, Cobb Tuning has been quietly at work disseminating their expertise in the Bosch MED17.x ECUs and experience with engineering OBD protocols, to develop and introduce the tuning benchmark to the Volkswagen world. With the rollout of the Cobb MK6 GTI AccessPort AP3-VLK-001 and enabling Cobb ProTuners to perform custom & comprehensive tuning services both directly and via E-Tuning, the VW enthusiast community is truly at the brink of metamorphoses.  Historically, the release of the Cobb AccessPort to new platforms tends to launch the platforms to new levels of tuning prowess & personalized refinement, and I’m excited to be partnering with MAPerformance and Cobb Tuning to further the advancement of these cars!

The first VW MK6 AccessPort release will be for the USDM Mk6 GTI (2010-2011 2.0 engines), which is a great platform and enthusiastic community.  No longer will Mk6 GTI owners be forced to choose between a handful of generic flashes; they can now have a truly tuned engine, with calibrations written and refined for the unique modifications on their car, as well as the state/health of the engine, turbo and fuel systems.  Additionally, one can have unlimited tunes/maps for their vehicle that goes far beyond different fuel types or octane levels.  Many of my customers request custom maps for the different driving events they attend, and the MK6 GTI Accessport will be key in keeping tabs on every aspect of these machines. Environments such as drag racing and airstrip roll racing (max power), road course track events (smooth and predictable power onset, optimal heat management), time attack, drifting, etc, will all be supported. Each have unique power/torque output, boost and throttle response and heat management calibrations the owner desires, improving the driving experience and promoting longevity & reliability of the powertrain.

We received an early access Cobb AccessPort for the Mk6 GTI last week, and have been hard at work acquiring and analyzing data from the MAPerformance GTI on our in-house dyno.  A couple days were spent extracting as much information as was technically possible with the vehicle in stock hardware configurations. With the AccessPort, monitoring and datalogging is revolutionized, as Cobb has written custom code to enable an incredible amount of data to travel through the Hex CAN network – I’ve tested the Cobb MK6 GTI Accessport to datalog over 30 channels at over 13hz!  For the tuners who will be analyzing the detailed operation of all the engine systems, this is huge compared to the 12 channels at 2-3hz afforded by VCDS.

The Cobb VW MK6 GTI AP comes preloaded with standard Off-the-Shelf maps suitable for premium pump gasoline, and make very healthy power over stock.  Whilst the low-end torque spike is limited, the power output of the OTS maps are very linear, predictable and healthy.  There will certainly be additional power gained with ProTuning in the coming weeks however, as seen in the dyno results below, the OTS maps are no slouch.

So what’s next for the Mk6 GTI platform? The sky is the limit! The general Mk6 owners can be expecting significantly more refined tunes with the COBB Tuning MK6 GTI Accessport AP3-VLK-001, most noticeable in drivability and the connection between the right foot and power applied to the ground. The Mk6 owners with non-standard or mismatched hardware (intakes, downpipes, intercoolers, etc) can now expect a COBB Accessport tune optimized for their hardware; resulting in the benefits described above as well as introducing consistency and reliability to the engine performance.  To elaborate, the powertrain will be targeting and anticipating the turbo and fuel system characteristics that are customized for the specific configuration, and therefore the systems reach and stay on targets with stability and minimal corrections, instead of fighting itself to make significant corrections in order to reach and maintain prescribed targets.

I personally foresee, and am most excited about, the use of E85 and ethanol blends becoming more common.  In addition, I’m sure everyone will be excited about the custom features and flexibility that Cobb can/has integrated into the MK6 GTI tuning suite, such as boost by gear, modifying program code to remove load & torque limitations, and inevitably things like Flat Foot Shifting, 2-step, etc.

We’ll be working rapidly over the next few weeks developing VW MK6 GTI ProTunes on the MAPerformance Mk6 GTI, as well as a few local vehicles of various modification configurations, so be sure to check back often for all Mk6 Cobb AccessPort related news, as well as the MAPerformance Mk6 GTI performance parts development!

Cheers,
Brian May, in association with MAPerformance
